In this interactive clinic, Downbeat award winning director and SoCal professional arranger Steve Torok, along with the MiraCosta Jazz Collective, demonstrate simple approaches for using lead sheets and stock combo arrangements as the basis for creating unique and interesting “re-arrangements.” The simple techniques discussed require very little knowledge of jazz theory or arranging and should be of interest to all directors that must contend with smaller ensembles and variable instrumentation.

Yale Strom is one of the world’s premiere music ethnologists of Jewish, Roma and the world’s immigrant communities. His latest composition, Chaldean Jazz explores traditional music of San Diego’s southern Iraqi refugee community. Featuring an all-star Jazz quintet, it explores Chaldean melodies and modalities through a jazz lens. Yale’s collaboration with San Diego’s Chaldean community was funded by the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst Program.

This program also features the legendary Steve Torok with the MiraCosta Jazz Collective performing jazz interpretations of Yale’s Klezmer compositions with guest performances by Yale Strom and Elizabeth Schwartz.

Please join us for the 10th Annual Oceanside Jazz Festival at MiraCosta College on Saturday May 7. This year’s featured guest is iconic guitarist Mike Stern. 

One of the most esteemed and talented electric guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has distinguished himself over a four-decade career that has encompassed musical partnerships with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Henderson and has also released 16 solo recordings (six of which were nominated for Grammy Awards). Mike will be featured with our 2015 Downbeat Award winning big band MOJO at the evening concert and present a free master class earlier in the day. 

The educational festival is an all day event. For the past several years we have successfully piloted a new format that has been found to be quite beneficial. Feedback has been very positive from both students and directors.

Dear Jazz Band Directors,

 

This is a reminder of the invitation to join us for the 9th Annual Oceanside Jazz Festival at MiraCosta College on Saturday May 2, 2015. We are two months away from the festival.  I am extremely excited to announce that this year’s featured guest is legendary saxophonist and composer Benny Golson. For the past two years we have successfully piloted a new format that has been found to be quite beneficial. Feedback has been very positive from both students and directors.

 

Each band will receive…

 
  • A customizable 45 minute clinic / performance timeslot with three of our world-class adjudicators

Lecture/performance pianist and hard-bop pioneer Horace Silver, who passed away in 2014, composed some of the most enduring tunes in jazz history. Violinist Yale Strom is one of the world’s leading experts and performers of klezmer and Roma music. Strom will join the MiraCosta College Jazz Collective for a night of eclectic music that fuses the varying influences of jazz, funk and klezmer with arrangements by Steve Torok.

A master class will be presented in the concert hall at 3:30 pm.

Dan Siegel and Steve Torok will be performing on Saturday January 10.  Dan is a world renowned contemporary jazz artist and a MiraCosta faculty member. Check him out at www.dansiegelmusic.com. The event is sponsored by the MiraCosta College music department and will include fellow faculty members Bob Boss (guitar) and Justin Grinnell (bass). Donald Barrett is on drums.

A horn section selected from MiraCosta Jazz and Commercial music staff and students will also be featured.

These end-of-semester concerts will feature an exciting collaboration between the Frequency Vocal Jazz Program, MOJO (MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra), and the Jazz Collective on alternate nights and in various configurations. Classic and contemporary jazz by great past and present composers and arrangers, including student and faculty works, will be performed. KOCT TV will be filming and later airing Friday night's performance!

The dance company is Avocado Dance Theatre. 

Avocado Dance Theatre, resident company at the Temecula Theatre, is a community-based dance company developed by Dance Theatre Collective of Southern California, with the support of Temecula Presents. Dancers are local to the Inland Empire and North County, and work with local professional choreographers and guest artists to create interesting and unique dance works for performance.

The concert length new work is entitled A-Scent Between Stream and Consciousness, created by Avocado's artistic director and choreographer Lori Craig Torok. It is an exploration of the birth of an idea (stream of consciousness) and the connections between people and ideas. The dance suite is entitled Codex Atlanticus.

This year’s Jazz Festival begins with The James Nation Quartet at 12:30 pm on our outdoor stage. Enjoy the patio setting for our music and browse the marketplace filled with arts, crafts, and event merchandise.
